The first few minutes after Super Bowl 50, two men became a trending topic on social media. Not the moments the ball was fumbled. Not the moments the defense or offense missed the play. Not the moments a touchdown was made, or even the half-time show. Instead one topic became prominent as fans, onlookers, and media observed something from both sides, the behavior and responses of two MVP players.

Many were upset with Cam Newton because he seemingly showed poor sportsmanship in how he handled the loss. However, it wasn’t long before the other side was digging up old reports on how Peyton Manning had behaved poorly in the past. It doesn’t matter which side you land on; all sides teach us something about our jobs.

Behavior matters. While both Manning and Newton have MVP status in the NFL, we may relate to their humanity that has played out on international media. The truth is, we have all behaved poorly at some point in our life. Fearless job-seeker, how you behave on the job matters, for this job and all future jobs.

Behavior is observable. It is how people do what they do. The question you may want to ask yourself is how am I behaving and how do others see my behavior on the job? TTI Success Insights, a world leader source for research-based, validated assessment and coaching says, “Behavior research suggests that the most effective people are those who understand themselves, both their strengths and weakness, so they can develop strategies to meet the demands of their environment.”

Let me offer you four reasons why behavior assessments may be a good idea for you:

  1. It creates self-awareness.
  2. Gives you the ability to control your behavior.
  3. Gives you greater ability to know others.
  4. Provides you more opportunity to contribute to the team and organization.

If you have never assessed your behavior, let me suggest you do. Creating this type of self-awareness not only betters you as a whole person, but the people you work with too.
