In Charles Duhiggโ€™s The Power of Habit, he states thatย โ€œThe habits that matter most are the ones that, when they start to shift, dislodge an remake other patterns.โ€ย This means that if you just change one little thing and start creating a habit, it will have a ripple effect. For example, when I have breakfast with my family, I am more prone to keep off my email until I get to work, and I show up to work recharged, focused, and ready to dive in. Which, in turn, makes me more productive throughout the course of my work day.

Usually when we look at habits, we approach it with a long list of all the things that we need to change. For instance, when it comes to health, people try to confuse you with plans and diets, gimmicks and trainers, when in reality it is simple: eat well and exercise. We all know that if you can do these two things well, you are well on your way to becoming a healthier version of yourself.ย I am guilty of this. I tell myself that I have to do 100 different things when I could just decide that I am going to start walking around the block everyday. This small habit alone could get me unstuck rather than trying to juggle a trainer, gym class, new book, and new workout gear.

So, what new habit can you start today that will create ripple effects in your career? Here is a practical step to make that happen: write it down.

Studies show that you are 42% more likely to achieve their goals if you write them down. So, here I go: My habit is going to be taking a walk. Which will have a ripple effect on my personal life and my business.ย

A huge change is only one small decision away. And you get to choose to start one small habit today. ย
